The North Target Store
2006
A seven-year-old Mouse and Charlie were in Target looking for a swimsuit for Mouse while the pizzas they ordered at Marco’s were being prepared. Mouse had a sleepover at a friend’s in The Gables and had forgotten her suit, so Charlie was pushing a shopping cart with Mouse sitting in the front, facing him. They hadn’t gotten 20 feet inside when the beat dropped over the sound system.
“Charlie! They’re playing my song!” -Mouse, who had been binging all the S Club 7 series. Miami 7, LA 7, and Hollywood 7. He was thankful. Barney was brutal. “Sally The Camel” still tortures him to this day.
Mouse stood up and started singing and dancing in the cart as Charlie headed toward the kids clothing section.
“Don’t stop moving to the funky funky beat!” -Mouse
Mouse could dance, and Mouse could sing. Charlie always loved this. As he turned down an aisle, he spotted Miss Templeton, Mouse’s teacher. Mouse’s back was turned so Charlie just pushed the cart right up next to Miss Templeton’s cart just as Mouse did a pirouette in the cart and saw her. Completely unfazed, Mouse kept singing.
And just go with the magic, baby / I can see it there in your eyes (I can see it there in your eyes)
Miss Templeton joined her.
Right here on the dance floor is where you gotta let it go
Charlie had been recording on his new Sony Ericsson K800i, which had a Cybershot camera.
Hi, this is Penny. Getting to edit this is awesome! When Charlie showed me that video, oh my god! We interrupted (I paused editing and just Facetimed her!!!) Mouse all the time with random Facetimes, just us singing “Don’t stop moving to the funky funky beat!” and then hanging up. Ok, enough of Mouse and Charlie in the House of MILF. Yep. I said that. According to Charlie, Mouse was more effective than any puppy ever.

Present Day

Bella was the most experienced with horses, so she’d offered at first to take care of the stalls and set out the feed, and the daily care of the Appaloosa and Bocephus, JePo’s new friend the black stallion. Jessie had offered to help. She’d never even had a pet as a kid, so she was curious about everything. It didn’t take long for Bella to realize Jessie was amazing with horses. By the end of the first week, Jessie was handling it on her own. She got up with Penny and Samantha but came to the barn first, letting the horses out of their stalls. The Appaloosa started following her around as she worked. Bella noticed this and today was going to show Jessie how to put the saddle and bridle on and give her some riding tips.
Bella showed up with Penny and Charlie at just the right time. Jessie had her Bluetooth speaker blasting and was dancing in and out of the first two stalls, sweeping them out and then shoveling them into a wheelbarrow, which all got wheeled over to the composter that JePo had set up for the garden they were putting in around the diner.
When the song ended, Penny shouted over to Jessie.
“Don't stop moving to that S Club beat!”
Jessie spun around to see Charlie, Bella, and Penny smiling at her.
Charlie waved her over. “Jessie, come here, I’ll show you all something that will make you feel better.”
Charlie dug out his phone and pulled up the iCloud video of Mouse dancing and singing in Target. Charlie forgot to pause it at the end before…
“Holy shit! That’s Miss Templeton isn’t it!” -Penny
“She taught in Austin, Charlie, what was she doing in McAllen?” -Bella
“Yeah, Charlie!” -Jessie, already feeling better.
All they got was that Jones Family grin as he walked away.
“Here’s your breakfast you two, be safe Jessie.” -Penny set down two bags and coffee cups on top of a feed barrel.
After Bella had shown Jessie how to prepare the Appaloosa, she brought over a step stool and held the reigns as Jessie got up on the horse.
“Have you noticed how much he pays attention to you?” -Bella
“It’s cute, he follows me around.” -Jessie
“He’s bonding with you. After this ride, he’s yours. You’ll have to name him.” -Bella
“But, Joey…” -Jessie
“Saw it coming before I did. Plus, he wants to catch one of the Mustangs, I think he’s already got one picked out.” -Bella
“So just remember, he’ll go where you’re looking. Take it slow, ride along the fence by the road to the tracks, and on the way back, let him run a little, but not too much. You’ll have to get used to the stance.” -Bella, showing Jessie the best stance for a run.
“That’s it?” -Jessie
“Yep!” -Bella, smacking the Appaloosa on the but playfully to get him moving.
As Jessie rode out of the pen, Bella sang to herself a little as she walked out of the barn and over to the diner to meet her boyfriend, and boss, Sheriff Joey Strongbull.
I can feel the music
moving through me everywhere
Ain't no destination baby
We don't even care
There's a place to be
If you need the right education
Let it take you there
